Last night I wrote that I thought Libby would delay for as long as possible the upcoming trials so as not to hurt Republicans' (already diminished) chances in the 2006 elections. Then should he have to go to jail, Dubya would pardon him after November 2008.
Via Americablog today, I see an article by John Dean that says the same thing. His most important point, however, is the hit that Cheney will take if his "firewall goes down."
So if Libby can take the heat for a time, he and his former boss (and friend) may get through this. But should Republicans lose control of the Senate (where they are blocking all oversight of this administration), I predict Cheney will resign "for health reasons."
This is all the more reason for us to take back the Senate in 2006 - hit hard, fast, and as frequently as possible. Keep hitting them until they don't rise.
It's also all the more reason for Corzine not to give into certain Green Party candidates-turned Republicans who are calling for him to hold a special election to fill his Senate seat. We need every last seat.
